Melvin Foster, a former linebacker for the University of Iowa Hawkeyes who later served nearly 15 years as a deputy sheriff in Harris County, Texas, has died. He was 59.[1][2]
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez announced Foster's death on X on December 29, 2024, describing it as recent and unexpected. Gonzalez called Foster "an incredible man and public servant" who left behind a strong legacy.[1]
Foster played college football for the Iowa Hawkeyes from 1988 to 1991. He was a member of the 1990 team that won the Big Ten Conference championship and played in the Rose Bowl on January 1, 1991, against the University of Washington.[3][4]
During his junior season in 1990, Foster recorded 104 tackles, leading the team. In 1991, his senior year, he led the Hawkeyes with 100 tackles.[2]
Prior to college, Foster played at Jack Yates High School in Houston, graduating in the class of 1986. He earned USA Today All-American and All-State honors there and participated in the Texas state championship in 1985.[1]
After college, Foster spent time with the Dallas Cowboys in 1992.[5] He was inducted into the Harris County Sports Association Hall of Fame. An online obituary described him as a "giving man with a big heart."[1][6]
