NFL fans express frustration over fragmented streaming rights and rising costs

National Football League fans have voiced frustration with the increasing complexity and cost of accessing games due to the league's distribution across multiple streaming platforms. OutKick reporter Davey Hudson interviewed supporters in Nashville, Tennessee, and New York City, who described challenges in tracking game broadcasts and managing subscriptions.

Fans reported needing subscriptions to several services to watch games. One supporter said it is frustrating to determine which app carries a matchup and to pay for multiple platforms. Others noted subscribing to at least three or four services, with some requiring five or six.

The NFL's current media rights agreements distribute regular-season games across traditional networks and streaming services. Amazon Prime Video holds exclusive rights to Thursday Night Football through the 2033 season.[1] YouTube streams NFL Sunday Ticket, providing out-of-market Sunday afternoon games, through 2027.[2]

Netflix will present an exclusive Christmas Day doubleheader in 2024 as part of a new streaming partnership.[3] Peacock, NBCUniversal's streaming service, carries select NFL games, including a Wild Card playoff matchup in January 2024.[4]

A New York Jets season ticket holder with NFL Sunday Ticket told Hudson that some games remain inaccessible despite these subscriptions. Fans suggested the fragmented model amounts to a money grab and predicted a potential consolidation similar to satellite TV bundles.

To access all regular-season games, including local and national broadcasts, supporters often combine services like YouTube TV for NFL Sunday Ticket with others covering CBS, Fox, NBC, ESPN and streaming exclusives.
