Mary Lou Hamlin, mother of NASCAR Cup Series driver Denny Hamlin, addressed the Gaston County Board of Commissioners on January 7, 2025, calling for increased funding for fire department staffing, equipment and emergency response training following a house fire that killed her husband.[1][2]
The fire occurred on December 28, 2024, at the couple's two-story home near Stanley, North Carolina. Mary Lou Hamlin, 69, said she pulled her husband, Dennis Hamlin, 75, from the burning house but he later died from catastrophic injuries at a hospital. She was airlifted to a burn center in Winston-Salem for treatment.[1][3]
"Dec. 28 was one of the saddest days of my life. It was the last time I saw my husband of 52 years when I pulled him out of our burning home. In addition to losing my husband, I lost everything from my entire life," Mary Lou Hamlin said during the meeting, fighting back tears.[1]
She highlighted that fire trucks were on scene but lacked water initially to fight the blaze, advocating for budget allocations to address such gaps in rural fire protection.[1]
Denny Hamlin's sister, Lisa Chapman, also testified, describing her arrival at the scene to find the house engulfed in flames with no water being applied.[1]
Denny Hamlin, 44, competes full-time for Joe Gibbs Racing in the No. 11 Toyota Camry XSE in the NASCAR Cup Series. NASCAR issued a statement on December 30, 2024, mourning Dennis Hamlin's passing and noting his support for his son's racing career.[2][4]
