U.S. midfielder Cardoso sprains ankle five weeks before World Cup
Atletico Madrid announced on Thursday that U.S. midfielder Johnny Cardoso sprained his right ankle in training five weeks before the World Cup. The 24-year-old will undergo physiotherapy and rehabilitation sessions, with his return to competition depending on recovery progress. The club provided no specific timetable.
In a statement on its English-language social media, Atletico said: "He will undergo physiotherapy and rehabilitation sessions in the gym, and the progress of his recovery will determine his return to competition."
Cardoso has made 23 appearances for the U.S. national team since his debut in 2020. The Americans open their Group D World Cup campaign on June 13 against Paraguay in Inglewood, California, followed by matches against Australia and Turkey.
Atletico Madrid has four La Liga rounds remaining while chasing a top-four finish. The club exited the Champions League semifinals this week after losing to Arsenal.
